First-Time Lighting Upgrade: What One Homeowner Asked Us

We recently got a call from a homeowner — let’s call her Emily — who wanted to install a few ceiling chandeliers and some wall sconces. She told us she’d never hired an electrician for this kind of work before and had no idea what it might cost or what the process would look like.

Emily’s questions are ones we hear all the time:

  • “Do you come out and give an estimate first?”
  • “Can you just show up and do the work hourly?”
  • “How do I know if what I want is even possible?”

Using Emily’s call as an example, we’ll explain how we typically handle first-time lighting upgrades with chandeliers and sconces, so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: The Initial Call and Choosing Estimate vs. Hourly

On the phone, Emily told us she wanted several chandeliers and a couple of wall sconces installed but didn’t have a ballpark price in mind. Because of that, she decided an in-person estimate would be best.

We usually offer two options, just like we did for her:

  • On-site estimate: We come out, look at your existing wiring and mounting locations, talk through your lighting plan, and give you an approximate price before any work starts.
  • Hourly visit: We show up ready to work, bill by the hour, and you pay for time and materials. This can be good for simple, straightforward swaps.

For first-time lighting projects with multiple fixtures, we almost always recommend starting with an estimate. It lets us confirm that what you’re envisioning is actually possible with your home’s current wiring and structure.

Step 2: Scheduling and What We Look At On-Site

Like Emily, many homeowners work from home, so scheduling can be flexible. She mentioned she was home Monday through Friday and that her husband would be off a few days the following week. That gave us a nice window to set up a visit.

When we come out for an estimate, we typically check:

  • Existing power: Is there already a junction box or sconce box where you want each fixture?
  • Switch locations: Do you want new switches or dimmers added, or are we using existing ones?
  • Ceiling and wall structure: Is the ceiling strong enough for the chandelier? Are there studs where you want sconces?
  • Circuit capacity: Can your current electrical circuits safely handle the additional lighting load?

This visit is also when we talk through details that affect price and time, like fixture size, ceiling height, and how many rooms we’re working in.

Step 3: Cost Factors for Chandeliers and Wall Sconces

Emily’s biggest concern was cost, and that’s very common. While every home is different, we walk through the same main factors on every estimate:

  • New wiring vs. existing boxes: Swapping a fixture onto an existing box is usually quick. Running new wire and cutting in new boxes takes more time and materials.
  • Ceiling height: Standard 8–9 foot ceilings are straightforward. Two-story entries or vaulted ceilings often require extra equipment and labor.
  • Fixture complexity: Simple, lightweight fixtures install faster than heavy chandeliers with lots of assembly and crystals.
  • Number of fixtures: More chandeliers and sconces add to total cost, but grouping them in one visit is usually more economical than multiple small trips.
  • Switches and dimmers: Adding dimmers or extra switch locations adds both parts and labor.

After we’ve seen everything in person, we give you a clear, approximate price range so you’re not surprised when it’s time to schedule the actual work.

Step 4: How to Prepare Your Home Before We Arrive

Once Emily decided to move forward, we gave her a short prep list. Doing these few things before we arrive can save time and help the job go smoothly:

  • Have fixtures on-site: Make sure all chandeliers, sconces, and any decorative bulbs are delivered and opened so we can confirm everything is intact.
  • Clear the work areas: Move furniture, decor, and rugs away from where we’ll be working. We bring drop cloths, but open space helps.
  • Decide on heights: Think about how low you want chandeliers to hang and how high you want sconces. We’ll fine-tune with you on-site.
  • Plan for power off: We’ll turn power off to the circuits we’re working on, so let us know if anything critical is on those circuits.

We always treat your home with respect, but a little preparation on your end goes a long way toward a clean, efficient installation.

Step 5: What Happens During Installation Day

On the installation day itself, the process is usually very straightforward:

  • We review the plan with you one more time, fixture by fixture.
  • We turn off power to the appropriate circuits and verify they’re safe to work on.
  • We install or reinforce boxes, mount the chandeliers and sconces, and make all electrical connections to code.
  • We install switches or dimmers if they’re part of the project.
  • We test every light and switch with you before we pack up.

For a typical home with a few chandeliers and a couple of sconces, most projects are completed in a single day, depending on how much new wiring is needed.

Thinking About Your Own Lighting Upgrade?

If you’re like Emily and have never hired an electrician to install chandeliers or wall sconces, you don’t need to have all the answers up front. Your job is to bring the vision; our job is to tell you what’s possible, what it will take, and how much it will cost before you commit.

Whether you prefer a simple hourly visit or an on-site estimate first, we’re here to walk you through the process so your new lighting looks great, works safely, and fits your home and budget.
